BRIDGING THE GAP
Providing A Safe Space For Diasporic Kids
ABOUT BRIDGING THE GAP
Our Background
Bridging The Gap is a platform that is aiming to help diasporic children feel more comfortable. A diaspora is a spread of people from their original homeland. Common examples in Bangalore are Koreans moving to India or Indian Americans moving to India. The diasporic community in any country often struggles to settle into the foreign nation, due to challenges like unrelatable food and culture, racism and strong language barriers. This especially affects children and teenagers and hinders their social and personal development due to frequent experiences of isolation and even bullying.
As the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore often attracts talent hailing from all races and backgrounds, thus bringing together a very diverse diasporic community within the city. This can especially be seen in international schools where children traveling with their parents often transfer in throughout the year.
However, these children remain a minority within a vast majority of Indian students and often face casual racism and isolation from other students due to a foreign language or culture. Naturally, they are limited to socializing with very few members of their original community at school, if at all, which severely impairs their social and personal development.
Bridging The Gap helps these kids by providing them with a safe space to express their thoughts and concerns while providing them with a social circle to help foster those integral skills
